Designing Your Dream Lakefront Airbnb

Are you considering turning your lakefront property into a lucrative Airbnb or VRBO rental? Designing a space that's not only comfortable but also visually appealing can significantly enhance your rental's appeal.

Here are some key design tips to help you create a memorable lakefront getaway.

Embrace the Natural Beauty

  • Maximize Natural Light: Large windows and glass doors can frame stunning lake views and flood the space with natural light.

  • Neutral Color Palette: Opt for a neutral color palette that complements the natural surroundings. Earthy tones like beige, gray, and brown can create a serene atmosphere.

  • Natural Materials: Incorporate natural materials like wood, stone, and rattan to bring the outdoors in.

Choose soothing colors. Neutrals such as beige and cream create a serene atmosphere.

Lakeside and seaside homes lend themselves naturally to blue and green color palettes, which are also relaxing.

Create a Relaxing Atmosphere

  • Comfortable Seating: Invest in comfortable seating arrangements, such as cozy sofas and armchairs, perfect for unwinding and enjoying the view.

  • Soft Textiles: Soft, plush textiles like throws, pillows, and rugs can add warmth and texture to the space.

  • Calming Decor: Minimalist decor with clean lines and soft lighting can create a peaceful ambiance.

People are going to bring stuff. Keep surfaces clutter free so they feel they have enough space to spread out and relax.

Choose comfortable sofas that people can imagine falling into, eating popcorn, and watching a movie after the sunsets.

Outdoor Living Spaces

  • Spacious Deck or Patio: A spacious outdoor deck or patio is essential for enjoying the lakefront view.

  • Outdoor Seating: Comfortable outdoor seating, such as Adirondack chairs or a patio dining set, is perfect for relaxing and entertaining.

  • Fire Pit: A fire pit can create a cozy atmosphere for evening gatherings.

  • Waterfront Access: Ensure easy access to the lake with a dock or boat slip.

Amenities. Amenities. Amenities.

You and your family / friends can do ALL the THINGS!

Practical Considerations

  • Storage Solutions: Ample storage solutions, such as built-in cabinets and closets, can help keep the space organized. Remember, you’ll need a space you can lock for owner supplies such as cleaning supplies, replacement items, and tools.

  • Smart Home Technology: Consider incorporating smart home technology, such as voice-activated devices and smart thermostats, for added convenience. Many hosts now use smart locks to change out codes from guest to guest, enable self check-in, and maintain the home even when they can’t be on site. Smart thermostats are invaluable for this, too.

  • Eco-Friendly Features: Eco-friendly features like energy-efficient appliances and water-saving fixtures can appeal to environmentally conscious guests. Do you have an exterior outlet that EV / Tesla driver’s can use? Let them know!

Local Charm

  • Local Art and Decor: Incorporate local artwork and decor to give your Airbnb a unique touch.

  • Local Amenities: Provide information about local attractions, restaurants, and activities.

By following these design tips, you can create a stunning lakefront Airbnb that guests will love. Remember, the key is to create a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Recap Checklist

Have you considered where guest’s will keep their things? Hangers in the closet, luggage holders, etc.

Are you ready for self-check in? Can you monitor and manage activities from anywhere (eg smart thermostat, smart lock)?

If you have a Roku TV, you can use their Guest feature. Your guests set their checkout date, and the TV logs them out of streaming services they logged into while there on the date set.

What amenities do you offer? Highlight them in photos and repeat them everywhere you get a chance.

Design spaces to be functional: Hooks outside for wet items, plastic plates and service pieces for outdoor dining, etc.

Neutral color palettes allow for calming spaces while also making it easy to swap things in and out as tastes change, items get damaged, things go missing.
